Wyoming leans on small business more than almost any state

In Wyoming, small businesses employ nearly two of every three workers. The SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 Small Business Profile, based on 2022 Census data, counts 81,924 small businesses, 98.9% of Wyoming firms, employing 135,636 people, or 65.2% of employees. Small business employment grew 20.1% between 1998 and 2022, faster than the national rate.

Recent job growth came from small firms. Between March 2023 and March 2024, 3,425 establishments opened and 2,934 closed. Small businesses gained 20,554 jobs and lost 19,060, a net increase of 1,494, while the state as a whole added 1,055. Larger employers shed jobs on net; small ones more than made up for it.

Reporting banks issued $237.1 million in new loans to Wyoming businesses with revenues of $1 million or less in 2023. In a state of long distances and small towns, an owner who needs money this week may not have a lender nearby who can act that fast. A merchant cash advance is one alternative: the funder buys part of the business's future receivables and collects it from sales, which is a different structure from a loan.

The population centers are spread out. Cheyenne and Laramie sit in the southeast corner, Casper in the middle, Gillette in the Powder River Basin, Rock Springs and Green River along I-80 in the southwest, Sheridan and Cody in the north, and Jackson in the shadow of the Tetons.

Energy, tourism and ranching: where Wyoming MCA demand comes from

Wyoming's MCA demand comes from three engines, energy, tourism and agriculture, plus the contractors, professional firms and Main Street businesses that serve them.

Energy services

The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies Wyoming as the nation's largest coal producer, with most output from the surface mines of the Powder River Basin around Gillette. Oil and natural gas fields add drilling and production activity across the state. Small oilfield and mining service firms, haulers, welders, equipment yards and the motels and restaurants that serve crews all ride those cycles. The SBA counts 1,385 small mining, quarrying and oil and gas businesses in Wyoming.

Tourism

Most of Yellowstone National Park lies in Wyoming, and the park recorded about 4.8 million visits in 2025. Grand Teton National Park logged about 3.8 million. Gateway communities such as Jackson, Cody, Dubois and Pinedale depend on lodging, restaurants, outfitters, guides and gift shops that earn much of their year in a short summer window, with Jackson adding a ski season. Small firms employ 78.8% of Wyoming's accommodation and food service workers. Our hospitality MCA leads page covers seasonal underwriting in depth.

Construction and professional services

Small firms employ 91.4% of Wyoming's construction workers and 86.7% of its professional, scientific and technical services workers. Contractors juggle a short building season and long drives between jobs; engineering, surveying and consulting firms often serve energy clients on invoice terms.

Ranching and Main Street

Cattle and hay operations, feed stores, vets, equipment dealers, auto shops and small-town retailers make up the rest. Their cash flow follows calving, haying, cattle sales and the seasons.

Short seasons and boom-bust cycles

Two forces make Wyoming cash flow uneven: a short tourist season and the energy cycle.

The tourist season is compressed. Yellowstone's roads open in stages each spring and close to most vehicles in fall, so many gateway businesses earn their year between late May and early October. They spend heavily before opening, on staff housing, inventory, vehicles and repairs, and their winter statements can look nearly empty. Jackson's ski season gives that area a second peak.

Energy moves in waves. When commodity prices and drilling programs rise, service firms in Casper, Gillette, Rock Springs and the Powder River Basin add trucks, workers and equipment fast. When they fall, receivables age and work dries up. Both phases can create cash needs: growth capital on the way up, a bridge on the way down.

Weather sets the building calendar. Long winters, wind and high elevation shorten the construction season, so contractors try to fit a year's work into the warm months.

For buyers, the lesson is the same across all three: underwrite on trailing twelve-month deposits, not the latest slow month, and time outreach to the run-up before each busy period.

Is there a Wyoming law for merchant cash advances?

As of 2026, we are not aware of a Wyoming statute requiring MCA-specific cost disclosures or provider registration, the kind of commercial financing law now in force in Utah, Virginia and Texas. Wyoming is known for business-friendly corporate and financial laws, but merchant cash advances remain subject to contract law, court review of whether a deal is a true purchase of receivables, and general state business law. Confirm current requirements with counsel before you fund or broker Wyoming deals.

Neighboring Utah does have a commercial financing registration and disclosure law, so a business located across the line in Utah follows Utah's rules. Tag each lead's business state in your CRM so the right paperwork goes out.

Federal law governs how you reach Wyoming owners, too. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act requires consent for autodialed and prerecorded calls and texts and confines telephone solicitations to 8 a.m. through 9 p.m. at the merchant's location. Every LoanLeads.io lead includes TCPA consent; see our TCPA consent and privacy page. Consider this general guidance, not legal advice.

Buying Wyoming leads: small volume, regional thinking

Wyoming is a low-population state, so expect modest volume and make each lead count. Many buyers run Wyoming as part of a Mountain West program with neighboring states rather than on its own.

  1. Revenue floor: base it on the smallest advance you write. Gateway-town and Main Street businesses may be small but steady.
  2. Time in business: twelve months or more for energy service firms, which can come and go with drilling cycles; six to twelve months elsewhere.
  3. Industries: energy services and trucking in Casper, Gillette and Rock Springs; hospitality in Jackson, Cody and the park gateways; construction and retail in Cheyenne and Laramie.
  4. Geography: weight the regions that match your industries; geography is one of the LoanLeads.io campaign filters.
  5. Calling: Wyoming keeps Mountain Time, so it runs two hours behind New York. East Coast teams can reach Wyoming owners until 7 p.m. Eastern at a normal 5 p.m. local close, and the TCPA's 9 p.m. local limit leaves more room.

Use real-time exclusive leads for owners shopping right now, and aged MCA leads to reach seasonal and energy-linked businesses when their need returns, such as a Cody outfitter in April or a Gillette hauler when a new contract starts. Live transfers fit small ISOs whose closers prefer to talk, and they help in a state where owners are often out on a ranch, a well site or a river and hard to catch on a cold call. Run a small test, track cost per funded deal for 30 days, and scale what works. Your results will track your offer and follow-up, and no lead seller can promise approvals.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Does Wyoming regulate merchant cash advances?

Wyoming has no MCA-specific disclosure or registration law that we are aware of as of 2026, while neighboring Utah does. Its business-friendly reputation does not remove contract law or federal TCPA rules from the picture. Get a Wyoming attorney's confirmation before funding, and apply Utah's rules to merchants based across that line.

Why do small businesses matter so much in Wyoming?

Small businesses employ 65.2% of Wyoming's workers, according to the SBA's 2025 profile, far above the national share. With few large employers outside energy and government, contractors, service firms, ranch suppliers and hospitality businesses carry much of the private workforce, which creates steady demand for working capital.

When do Wyoming tourism businesses need capital?

Usually in spring, before Yellowstone and Grand Teton traffic builds, when gateway businesses hire, house staff and stock inventory. Jackson businesses may also seek capital before ski season. Their winter statements can look thin, so underwrite on trailing twelve-month deposits.

Are Wyoming energy service firms good MCA prospects?

They can be. Haulers, welders, equipment yards and oilfield or mining service companies need capital when activity rises and when receivables age in a downturn. Revenue swings with commodity cycles, so review a full year of statements and set a firm time-in-business minimum.

Which Wyoming cities produce the most MCA leads?

Cheyenne and Casper produce the most volume, followed by Gillette, Laramie, Rock Springs, Sheridan, Jackson and Cody. Volume is modest statewide, so many buyers combine Wyoming with nearby states. Tell us which of those regions to favor when you build a LoanLeads.io campaign.

What hours should I call Wyoming merchants?

Every Wyoming county observes Mountain Time, two hours earlier than the East Coast. Keep telephone solicitations inside the TCPA's 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. local window. Contractors and energy crews answer early; hospitality owners in gateway towns are hardest to reach during peak summer weeks.

Can I buy Wyoming leads together with other states?

Yes. Because Wyoming's volume is modest, many buyers run it inside a Mountain West campaign with Montana, Colorado, Utah or South Dakota, keeping Wyoming-specific industry and revenue filters. Remember that Utah has its own commercial financing registration and disclosure law, so state tagging in your CRM matters.
