MCA Live Transfers Explained: How Pay-Per-Call Works for Funders
MCA live transfers connect a screened merchant to your rep in real time, and you pay per qualified call. Learn how billing works and how to staff for it.
An MCA live transfer is a phone call in which a merchant who has asked about funding is screened and then connected directly to your sales rep, live. You pay per qualified call rather than per lead, usually once the call passes an agreed duration. LoanLeads.io offers MCA live transfers alongside real-time and aged leads, with the same revenue, time in business, credit, industry and state filters.
What is an MCA live transfer?
An MCA live transfer is a warm handoff of a business owner who wants working capital, from the lead generator's phone line to yours, without hanging up. The merchant has already answered a few screening questions, so your rep starts the conversation with context instead of a cold open.
Think of it as the opposite end of the spectrum from an aged lead. With an aged file, you buy a name and number and do all of the contact work yourself. With a transfer, the contact work is done and you pay for the conversation. That is why pay-per-call usually costs more per unit than a form lead, and why it can still be the most efficient option for a shop whose bottleneck is conversations rather than closers.
LoanLeads.io sells MCA live transfers on a pay-per-call basis, quoted per campaign.
How does pay-per-call work, step by step?
The mechanics are similar across most providers. A typical MCA transfer moves through six steps:
- The merchant raises a hand. A business owner responds to an ad, submits a form or calls a number about funding.
- Screening. An agent or an interactive voice system confirms the basics your campaign requires, such as monthly revenue range, time in business, the amount needed and the state.
- Warm introduction. The screener tells the merchant they are being connected to a funding specialist and stays on the line while the call rings through.
- Connection. Your rep answers, and in many setups the screener briefly introduces the merchant before dropping off.
- Billable threshold. If the call lasts longer than the duration agreed in your campaign, it counts as a billable transfer.
- Reporting. You receive call records, and often recordings, so you can review quality and dispute calls that did not meet the criteria.
The details that matter most are in steps two and five: which questions are asked and what counts as billable. Get both in writing before the first call.
What makes a live transfer billable?
A transfer is usually billable when the merchant is connected to your rep and the call passes a minimum duration set in your agreement. The duration acts as a proxy for a real conversation, filtering out hang-ups, wrong numbers and immediate disqualifications.
Clarify these points before you start:
- Duration threshold. How many seconds of connected talk time count as a qualified call, and does hold time count?
- Screening criteria. Which answers must the merchant give before transfer, and are they recorded?
- Duplicates. If the same merchant is transferred twice within a set window, is the second call charged?
- Disputes. How do you flag a call that did not meet the criteria, and how quickly must you raise it?
- Hours. What happens to calls that arrive outside your answer window, and are unanswered calls charged?
A clear billing definition protects both sides. It also makes your cost per funded deal predictable, since you know exactly what each charge represents.
How should your team handle incoming transfers?
Your team should treat every transfer like the merchant is standing in your lobby. The merchant is on hold, interested and ready to talk, and that state lasts only seconds. Response speed matters even more here than it does for real-time form leads.
Shops that do well with transfers usually set up the following:
- A ring group, not a single line. Route transfers to several available reps so one busy closer does not mean a missed call.
- Agreed answer hours. Only accept transfers during windows when you are fully staffed.
- A 60-second opener. Greet by name, confirm the amount and use of funds the screener captured, then move to revenue, existing positions and time in business.
- Same-call document requests. Ask for recent bank statements and the application before the call ends, and send a secure upload link while you are still talking.
- Immediate disposition. Log the outcome in your CRM right away so disputes and reporting are accurate.
Review recordings weekly. You will quickly see whether lost deals trace back to screening quality or to how your reps open the call.
How do you measure whether live transfers are paying off?
You measure live transfers by following each billable call all the way to a funded deal. Talk time alone does not prove value. A campaign can deliver plenty of long calls and still produce few submissions if screening is loose or your opener is weak.
Track these numbers for every transfer campaign, week by week:
- Billable calls and the total charged for them.
- Answer rate: the share of transfers your team picked up before the merchant dropped.
- Document rate: the share of billable calls where the merchant sent bank statements.
- Submission and approval counts by funder.
- Funded deals, total funded amount and the revenue you earned on them.
Divide spend by funded deals to get your cost per funded deal, then compare it with your real-time and aged lead campaigns. If the document rate is low, listen to recordings before you blame the source: the gap is often in the first minute of the conversation. If the answer rate is low, fix staffing before buying more calls.
What compliance points apply to MCA live transfers?
Live transfers carry the same telemarketing rules as any other outbound sales contact, plus a few that are specific to calls. This is a general overview as of 2026, not legal advice, and you should confirm current rules with counsel.
- Consent behind the original contact. If the screener called the merchant first, that call must have been made in line with the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and its consent rules for the technology used.
- Artificial and AI voices. In February 2024 the FCC issued a declaratory ruling confirming that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" voices under the TCPA, so calls using them are subject to the same consent requirements as prerecorded calls.
- Call recording. Recording laws vary by state, and some states require every party to consent. Announce recording at the start of the call if you record.
- Do-not-call requests. If a merchant asks not to be called again, record it and honor it across your organization.
- Calling hours. Federal rules restrict telephone solicitations to between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the recipient's local time, and some states set narrower windows.

When do live transfers beat form leads?
Live transfers beat form leads when your bottleneck is getting merchants on the phone, not closing them once they are there.
| Situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Strong closers, but low contact rates on leads | Live transfers |
| Large opener team with a power dialer | Aged or real-time leads |
| Small team that cannot dial within minutes | Live transfers |
| Need high volume at the lowest unit cost | Aged leads |
| Want tight control of the first-touch experience | Real-time leads |
Many funders run a mix. Transfers keep the best closers busy with live conversations, while openers work real-time and aged leads in parallel. If that structure fits your shop, read how we support direct MCA funders or book a call to scope a pay-per-call campaign.

What MCA lead buyers say
Two real LoanLeads.io buyers, in their own words.
“Yeah, I'm really impressed with the aged.”
“My team is very happy with your leads. So that's why I want to personally call and inform you that. We'll do the same mix, 50-50, but we'll just double the volume. I'm happy. My team is happy. They don't complain about leads.”
Questions on this topic
How is a live transfer different from a real-time lead?
A real-time lead is a form submission delivered to you instantly, and your rep must then call the merchant. A live transfer is a merchant already on the phone who is connected straight to your rep. With a transfer, the contact step is done for you, which is why it is priced per qualified call instead of per lead.
What happens if my rep misses a transfer?
It depends on your agreement, so ask before you start. Some campaigns route the call to a backup line or end it, and charging rules for unanswered calls vary between providers. The best protection is a ring group with several reps and accepting transfers only during hours when you are fully staffed.
Can I filter live transfers by revenue or state?
Yes. Screening questions before the transfer typically cover monthly revenue range, time in business, the amount needed and the state. LoanLeads.io applies the same kinds of filters to live transfers as to real-time and aged leads. Keep the screening list short, because each extra question adds time before your rep picks up.
Are MCA live transfers recorded?
Many providers record calls for quality review and dispute handling, but practices vary. If you record on your side, remember that recording consent laws differ by state, and some require all parties to agree. Announcing the recording at the start of the call is a common practice. Confirm your approach with counsel.
How do I dispute a bad transfer?
Ask the provider for its dispute process up front, including the deadline for raising an issue and what evidence counts. Log each call outcome in your CRM immediately and keep the recording. A transfer that did not meet the agreed screening criteria or duration threshold is the typical basis for a dispute.
Is pay-per-call good for a small ISO?
It can be. A small ISO without a dialer or a large opener team often struggles to contact form leads quickly, and transfers remove that step. The tradeoff is a higher price per unit and the need to answer instantly. A small test campaign during your strongest staffing hours is a sensible start.
